For international travel, a passport is usually required. If you do not already have this travel document, you will need to apply for one in advance before your trip. Always ensure that you allow adequate processing time, as it can often be a lengthy procedure.

It is unlawful for U.S. citizens and nationals to enter or exit the United States without a valid U.S.A passport, though there are many exceptions, waivers are generally granted for U.S. citizens returning without a passport, and the exit requirement is not enforced.   • Quick Reminder: A Passport book is required for all international travel by air.
  • However a Passport card can be used to enter the US states at land border crossing or seaports-of-entry from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda.
  • If you have a stolen passport issue or a lost passport, you cannot travel with a passport card in its place. You will need to complete applications for a new passport. You can also conveniently report it stolen on the passport application if you have not yet done so with the authorities.
  • U.S. passport booklets are valid for travel by Americans to most countries and/or for certain purposes though you may require a visa to enter these countries you must make sure you are properly advised by your travel advisor before you travel to your destination.
  • Note: Generally, you must renew passport within five years of the date it expired. Passport renewal are generally quicker to complete if the expired passport is less than 5 years expired from the date of expiration. If you wait longer than five years, you'll have to follow the same procedure as a first-time passport applicant. You will need at least 6 months of validity at the time of travelling on your passport. That’s means your return date should be included in those 6 months when checking the expiration and validity.
